UMEUS’ custom-designed bay windows redefine urban micro-living
UMEUS' custom-designed bay windows redefine urban micro-living

As students settle into the new UMEUS Noli student housing in Frederiksberg, Denmark, we're taking a closer look at how architectural design can elevate micro living.

One of the project's key innovations is the custom-designed bay windows — a thoughtful alternative to the traditional “Russian windows” (double-layered windows with soundproofing qualities) – often used on noise-facing façades.

Instead, we integrated a built-in bench that:
- Enables silent night-time ventilation
- Supports single-layer windows for more daylight
- Strengthens the connection to the city through panoramic views
- Creates a cozy social niche — even in compact studios

As resident Sara Sokolowska - Katzer, 24, from Poland, puts it:
“UMEUS is my fifth student housing and I have to say it has blown me away. The studios are so bright, there's so much natural light... When I move out, I think I'll be super emotionally attached to the window. I sit on that bench every single day and look out at our neighborhood and let me tell you, I will miss it.”

With hundreds of bay windows, the façade brings rhythm, depth, and variation — earning the nickname "The Accordion Houses" from architecture critic Karsten Ifversen (Politiken).

Thank you to Nrep for our collaboration on this project.
