Delhus i Kommunen (Danish for “Shared Housing in Municipalities”)—the next phase of the Delhus project—has received funding and is now underway. In this phase, developed by EFFEKT and V!GØR in collaboration with Forening Del Hus, we continue our research into how we can transform existing single-family homes into multi-family housing—an essential transition towards sufficiency-based housing supply in Denmark.
Together with the city of Lejre, the new phase focuses on developing a practical tool for civil servants, politicians, and citizens to support the local transformation of single-family homes into shared housing. It explores the possibility of covering the projected population growth through the existing building stock without new construction.
This work builds on insights from the first phase, the Delhus Knowledge Project, which challenged the idea of a national housing crisis by reframing it as a distribution crisis. By mapping and communicating knowledge on the subdivision of single-family homes, the project showed how Denmark can meet the growing housing demand within the safe and just boundaries of the planet.
