Connecting Esbjerg: EFFEKT prequalified for the International Quarter
Connecting Esbjerg: EFFEKT prequalified for the International Quarter

EFFEKT in collaboration with Artelia and GXN is prequalified for the third phase of the International Quarter in Esbjerg!

Since 2017, Esbjerg Municipality has been working with Ungdomsbo and Realdania to develop the area, aiming for a neighbourhood where public spaces strengthen community, respond to climate challenges, and are built to last.

The main scope of the assignment consists of three parts:

  • A large part of the existing park, Portalparken, and the residential outdoor areas

  • A new public square

  • A pavilion to be located as part of the new public square

We’re excited to be prequalified for the next stage alongside three other teams: BOGL, FLÅK, and SLA. The selection is based on high architectural quality, experience with shared public spaces and recreational outdoor areas, solutions for local stormwater management, as well as documented work with circular materials and citizen engagement.

The project will bring the area together, including new student housing, around a shared gathering place – green, inclusive, and recreational – supporting community, food culture, and sustainable everyday life. A stormwater pond will manage heavy rainfall while serving as a learning and leisure feature, and the existing Portal Park will be enhanced with more green spaces, edible biodiversity, and movement opportunities for all ages.

We’re excited to continue developing a public space that demonstrates what sustainable, collaborative urban development can look like in practice.
