EFFEKT designs pavilions for new cultural zone at Refshaleøen

We are delighted to announce that Refshaleøens Ejendomsselskab has chosen our design proposal as the foundation for an exciting pilot project, initially consisting of three pavilions located in a new temporary cultural zone at the northern tip of Refshaleøen.

In response to the question, ‘How can we create flexible pavilions for workshops, exhibitions, studios, and offices as part of a new temporary cultural zone on Refshaleøen?’, EFFEKT's proposal offers a solution that builds on Refshaleøen’s unique industrial DNA. It combines high ceilings, spacious areas for creative activities and workshop ambiance with space for contemplation within a community-oriented architectural concept.

The pavilions are movable so they can be set up elsewhere on the site. Additionally, they can be scaled up over time if the need arises during the ongoing development of Refshaleøen.

Looking Towards the Future
According to Refshaleøens Ejendomsselskab “the pilot project is not only forward-thinking in terms of keeping Refshaleøen vibrant but also in terms of addressing the imperative need for more environmentally friendly construction.” The proposal suggests biogenic and renewable materials for all parts of the pavilions. They will stand on screw foundations, be heated with heat pumps, and the construction cost is expected to remain manageable.

Furthermore, EFFEKT has partnered with Enemærke & Petersen as the contractor to build on the previous collaboration on the "Living Places" project in Jernbanebyen. Based on experience, the preliminary assessment is that the new pavilions on Refshaleøen can be established with an even lower CO2 footprint, estimated at approximately 3.5 kg CO2/m2/year.

“Overall, EFFEKT's proposal aligns well with the visions for the further development of Refshaleøen presented by Refshaleøens Ejendomsselskab in collaboration with By & Havn. Therefore, we look forward to actively participating in the actual planning of the pavilions together with EFFEKT Architects and Enemærke & Petersen, so construction can hopefully commence soon.” Says Refshaleøens Ejendomsselskab in their announcement of the project.
