Refshaleøen

Building on Refshaleøen’s vibrant cultural legacy, the masterplan creates a new urban district where culture, creativity, entrepreneurship, and everyday life thrive side by side.

The plan is structured around two centers: the historic B&W Crossroads, preserving and strengthening the island’s industrial heritage and cultural life, and a new Everyday Crossroads around the future metro station, bringing together education, sports, retail, culture, and mobility. Together, they form the meeting point between Refshaleøen’s past and Copenhagen’s future.

Public life and nature form the foundation of the development. A connected green-blue network of parks, streets, waterfronts, and public spaces creates room for people, biodiversity, and water while shaping the character of future neighborhoods.

Drawing on the unique character of the former shipyard, the proposal transforms Refshaleøen’s industrial heritage into a framework for future growth. Throughout the masterplan, traces of the industrial past are celebrated and woven into the architecture and landscapes of the new districts, creating a rich and layered environment where water, culture, and everyday life come together.

Inspired by Copenhagen’s traditional urban fabric, the masterplan balances density with human scale through a predominantly low- and mid-rise building structure. The result is a walkable and vibrant urban environment where daily life unfolds through a rich network of streets, public spaces, and waterfront connections while preserving Refshaleøen’s distinctive character.
