On 13 September we celebrated the official opening of Tønder Havnefront, a new harbour exhibition and public space in the heart of Tønder. The project connects the town’s historic city center with a new square, a kiosk, climate-adapted streets, and renewed urban spaces — marking the completion of Tønder’s broader transformation into a living destination for generations to come.
What began as a climate adaptation initiative has evolved into a holistic renewal of the town’s public realm. The project strengthens Tønder’s connection to its cultural heritage and unique blue-green landscapes, while creating new squares, cloudburst parks, and activity spaces that enrich daily life for both residents and visitors.
A highlight of the process was the archaeological discovery of Tønder’s original harbour front, uncovered during excavation. This remarkable find is now preserved as an underground exhibition — designed in collaboration with Museum Sønderjylland and JAC Studios.
Tønder Midtby is the result of broad local collaboration between Tønder Kommune, the Tøndermarsk Initiative, and local stakeholders. The harbourfront underground exhibition was engineered by FULDENDT.
