Sjællandsk Muld

Sjællandsk Muld is a development project that represents the first phase of realizing a new residential area as part of the Hyllegaard Høje Masterplan.

The vision of Sjællandsk Muld is to create a lively community that unites modern living with ambitious sustainable solutions. The project will house a diverse pool of residents and support different forms of housing for both young people, families with children, singles and seniors. Organized in clusters of human scale and with a variety of heights, the division and placement of the dwellings create space and views between the settlement. In each cluster, it is possible to establish smaller community services and common areas, such as a greenhouse, workshop, tool sheds, laundry room, among others.

Located as the heart of the neighborhood is the communal house, a flexible space that can host community dining, activities, and events for up to 85 people. Nature is integrated into the homes as each dwelling actively relates to the sloping terrain with direct and easy access to the outdoor. The architectural outset focuses on building with as minimal a carbon footprint as possible, best achieved by prioritizing natural materials and focusing on a healthy indoor climate.

The building design follows a functional structure: the eaves are designed to both prevent overheating in the summer and to shield from wind and weather on facades, and provide covered outdoor spaces. The houses are designed for flexibility and disassembly with timber as the main material, and solar panels are embedded on south-facing roofs to cover electricity consumption for building operation, heating and the residents’ activities in the cluster.
