KulturØ Plaza
From wind-swept open space to active social zones and green pockets, KulturØ plaza becomes Middelfart newest meeting place.
The pre-existing layout of the plaza was designed together with the iconic KulturØ building. Its simple and neutral design and distribution was meant to highlight the building as the new and outstanding cultural beacon.
The buzzing cultural life happening inside the KulturØen institution however did not reflect on the outdoor spaces: despite its potential and the prominent position on the waterfront, the square was under-utilized and exposed to the strong winds.
In the revitalization of KulturØ plaza lies the opportunity to rethink the square as an active urban space for people, urban life, culture, events and play.
The project aims to transform the plaza into an active and cohesive urban space, by mixing functions together and creating spontaneous meeting places.
The areas are designed reflecting the interior organization of KulturØen, where activities and rest zones are spread and intertwined within Kulturøen. The new outdoor design proposes to create ten new areas, each of which with a special character that enables play, stay, performances, movement, conversations, serving food and drinks, games, swimming and more. All flexible and multifunctional set-ups with a wide range of uses to meet the desires and needs of all the different users.
